 नटी -- (प्रविश्य) आर्य इयमस्मि.  Actress - (Entering) Sir. Here I am

• (आर्य = Sir इयम्=This(fem.) अस्मि = I am )

सूत्रधारः ---- आर्ये स्वागतं ते.

• (आर्ये  = O Lady (Vocative case of आर्या) स्वागतम् = welcome,  ते=to you)

Director - Lady, my greetings to you.

नटी -- आज्ञापयत्वार्यः को नियोगोऽनुष्ठीयतामिति.

Actress - May your honour command what duty is to be executed by me

• (आज्ञापयतु = may command आर्यः = your honour कः = what नियोगः = duty अनुष्ठीयताम् = to e executed इति = thus )

सूत्रधारः --- आर्ये. ('चिरसङ्गीतोपासनेन' इत्यादि पठित्वा.') अस्ति किमप्यस्माकं गेहेऽशितव्यं न वेति.

Director --- Lady (Saying - 'By having practised music for a long time' etc.) is there anything to eat in our house or not?

• (चिरसङ्गीतोपासनेन => चिर-सङ्गीत-उपासनेन = By having practised music for a long time इति = this-आदि = etc पठित्वा =Saying. अस्ति=is किम् अपि = anything अस्माकम्=our गेहे =  in house अशितव्यम् = eatable  न=not वा=or इति=thus)

नटी ---- आर्य सर्वमस्ति

सूत्रधारः --- किं किमस्ति 

Director --- What things are there?

• (किम् What किम् What अस्ति)

नटी --- तद्यथा गुडौदनं घृतं दधि तण्डुला आर्येणात्तव्यं रसायनं सर्वमस्तीति। एवं तव देवा आशासन्ताम्।

Actress --- They are as follows; rice seasoned with guda, ghee curds, (simple) rice, and all elixir-like (i.e. delicious) things fit to be eaten by you. May the gods thus (ever) favour you!

•  (तत्=That यथा=as follows गुडौदनम्= ice seasoned with guda घृतम् ghee दधि curd तण्डुलाः rice आर्येण by you (sir) अत्तव्यम् it to be eaten by you रसायनम् elixir-like सर्वम् all अस्ति is इति thus एवं so ते to you देवाः the gods आशासन्ताम् favour)

सूत्रधारः --- आर्ये किमस्माकं गेहे सर्वमस्ति। अथवा परिहससि।

Director --- What, are all these things (really) in our house? Or are you joking? 

• (किम् = what अस्माकम् = our गेहे = in house सर्वम् = all अस्ति = is। अथवा=Or परिहससि=are you joking। )

नटी --- (स्वगतम्।) परिहसिष्यामि तावत् (प्रकाशम्) आर्य अस्त्यापणे।

Actress --- (To herself) Well, I'll joke (with him). (Aloud). Husband, they are--in the market.

• (स्वगतम् = To oneself परिहसिष्यामि = i will joke तावत्=just a little प्रकाशम्=aloud आर्य=Sir/Lord अस्त्यापणे=in the market)

सूत्रधारः --- (सक्रोधम्) आः अनार्ये एवं तवाशा छेत्स्यते। अभावं च गमिष्यसि। यदिदानीमहम् वरण्डलम्बुक इव दूरमुत्क्षिप्य पातितः।

Director --- (With anger). Ah! You hussy, your hopes will be similarly frustrated, and you too would be made away with, since just now (by you) I have been raised aloft and thrown down, like the stone at the end of the Varanda

• (सक्रोधम्= with anger, आः=Ah! अनार्ये=You hussy एवं similarly तव=your आशा=hopes छेत्स्यते=frustrated अभावम्=non-existence च=and गमिष्यसि=you will go यत् = that इदानीम् = now अहम् = I वरण्डलम्बुकः=string of a fish-hook इव=like दूरम्=far उत्क्षिप्य=raised aloft पातितः=thrown down)

(स्वगतम्।) परिहसिष्यामि तावत्। (प्रकाशम्।) आर्य अस्त्यापणे।

नटी --- मर्षतु मर्षत्वार्यः। परिहासः खलु मया कृतः।

Actress --- Pardon, sir, pardon! I indeed played a joke.

• (मर्षतु = Pardon आर्यः = sir परिहासः = joke खलु=indeed मया=by me कृतः= done)

सूत्रधारः --- तत्किं पुनरिदं नवमिव संविधानकं वर्तते। एका वर्णकं पिनष्टि अपरा सुमनसो गुम्फति इयं च पञ्चवर्णकुसुमोपहारशोभिता भूमिः।

Director --- Well, then what are these preparations that seem to be quite new here? One lady is pounding unguents; another is wreathing flowers; and this floor here is decked with the offerings of flowers of five colours.

• (तत् = then किम् = what पुनः =again इदम्=this  नवम् = new इव = like संविधानकम् = preparations वर्तते = are एका=one female वर्णकम्=unguent पिनष्टि=pounding अपरा=another female सुमनसस्=pleasantly गुम्फति=string into a garland इयम्=this च=and पञ्च-वर्ण-कुसुम-उपहार-शोभिता =decked with the offerings of flowers of five colours. भूमिः=floor)

नटी --- अद्योपवासो गृहीतः।

Actress---I have today undertaken a fast.

• (अद्य उपवासः =fast गृहीतः=undertaken)

सूत्रधारः --- किंनामधेयोऽयमुपवासः

• (किम्=what नामधेयः=name अयम् =this उपवासः=fast)   

नटी --- अभिरूपपतिर्नाम।

Actress --- It is called Abhirupa pati ("The giver of a handsome husband")

• (अभिरूपपतिः=The giver of a handsome husband नाम=name)

सूत्रधारः --- आर्ये। इहलौकिकोऽथ वा पारलौकिकः।

Director---Lady, in this world or in the next?

• (आर्ये=lady इहलौकिकः=of this world अथ वा= or पारलौकिकः of the next world)

नटी --- आर्य पारलौकिकः।

Actress --- Sir, in the next

सूत्रधारः --- (सरोषम्।) प्रेक्षन्तां प्रेक्षन्तामार्यमिश्राः। मदीयेन भक्तपरिव्ययेन पारलौकिको भर्ताऽन्विष्यते।

Director --- (Angrily), Look, worthy gentlemen, look! At the expense of my food, a (good) husband is sought for in the next world.

• (सरोषम्=angrily प्रेक्षन्ताम्=it should be looked at आर्यमिश्राः=worthy gentlemen मदीयेन भक्त-परिव्ययेन=At the expense of my food पारलौकिकः भर्ता अन्विष्यते = a husband is sought for in the next world.)

नटी --- आर्य प्रसीद प्रसीद। त्वमेव जन्मान्तरे भविष्यसीति।

Actress --- Be pleased, sir, be pleased! I have observed the fast that you yourself should be my husband in the next birth

• (आर्य = sir प्रसीद = Be pleased त्वम् एव =you yourself जन्म-अन्तरे = in the next birth भविष्यसि = will be इति = thus।)

सूत्रधारः --- अयमुपवासः केन त उपदिष्टः।

Director --- By whom was this fast recommended to you?

• (अयम् उपवासः = this fast, केन= by whom, ते उपदिष्टः= recommended to you)

नटी --- आर्यस्यैव प्रियवयस्येन चूर्णवृद्धेन।

Actress --- By Churnavriddha, your own dear friend.

• (आर्यस्य=of the sir एव=indeed प्रिय-वयस्येन =dear friend चूर्णवृद्धेन = By Churnavriddha)

Director ---  (Angrily). Ah! You son-of-slave, Churnavriddha! When, indeed, shall I see you being cut up by (the orders of) the enraged king Palaka, just like the scented, braided hair of a new bride.

सूत्रधारः --- (सकोपम्।) आः दास्याः पुत्र चूर्णवृद्ध कदा नु खलु त्वां कुपितेन राज्ञा पालकेन नववधूकेशकलापमिव सुगन्धं छेद्यमानं प्रेक्षिष्ये।

• (आः=Ah! दास्याः पुत्र= you son-of-slave कदा = when नु खलु = indeed त्वाम् = you कुपितेन राज्ञा पालकेन=by the enraged king Palaka नव-वधू-केशकलापम् इव = like the scented, braided hair of a new bride. सुगन्धम् = scented छेद्यमानम् = being cut up प्रेक्षिष्ये=shall I see )

नटी --- प्रसीदत्वार्यः। नन्वार्यस्यैव पारलौकिकोऽयमुपवासोऽनुष्ठीयते। (इति पादयोः पतति।)

Actress ---- May you honour be appeased. This fast, which is to bear fruit in the next world, is with reference to no one but your honour. (She falls at his feet)

• (प्रसीदतु = be appeased आर्यः=the sir ननु = indeed आर्यस्य = of the sir एव=indeed पारलौकिकः = thing of the next world अयम् उपवासः =this fast अनुष्ठीयते =  is being observed इति =thus पादयोः = at the feet पतति=faals) 

सूत्रधारः --- आर्ये। उत्तिष्ठ। उत्तिष्ठ। कथय कथयात्रोपवासे केन कार्यम्।

Director --- Lady, get up, pray get up; tell what is required for this fast.

• (आर्ये=Lady उत्तिष्ठ=get up कथय = tell अत्र =here उपवासे = in the fast केन कार्यम् = what is required to be done)
